We had one of the better turn outs of recent time at Santa Cruz this past weekend for the fall 505 open, with 17 boats coming to the line Saturday morning. Tyler Moore came out from the East Coast to sail with Rob (Doug won't have me anymore) Woelfel in Nige's VanMunster, Howie came up and Fritz came down to join him, Jeff and Mike, Fede and Pierre, Garreth and Parker came up from LA and all the way from San Diego, Bill and John, thank you all for coming.
Amazingly the local fleet turned out in force and most amazingly Dave and Bruce came out to play.
The racing on Saturday was very tight, with plenty of place changing and 4 races completed in 12-14 knots of wind. The race track was also littered with Islands of kelp caused by large swell the previous week, we all quickly learnt the skill for removal, some had more extreme technique than others. A thorough debrief after racing was enjoyed with beer provided by West Marine, many thanks, chips and salsa courtesy of Shelton Pipe and top tips from Howie and Mike, basically more vang....
Sunday dawned looking the same as Saturday, but instead of clearing it rained.... One high quality race was conducted and won by several hours by Nick and Steve, a second even better race was attempted but this time even Dave had seen enough and called an end to the pain.
Thanks to all the helpers in support boats and sitting on the pier keeping an eye on us all.

9 boats showed up at West River Sailing Club to compete in the Carl Miller regatta on September 23rd and 24th, 2006 in some of the best 505 racing conditions the Chesapeake Bay has seen all season. New boat owner Dave Burchfield made the trip up from North Carolina and Team Breton made the trek down from NJ for the event as well. Henry Amthor came up from Hampton to Team with Sol Marini all the way down from New England, and fresh from the light air of Saunderstown last weekend. Barney Harris roped in Clayton James. Local WRSC member Monty Schumpert teamed up with the perennially traveling Rene De La Rie. Team Watson consisted of Doug sailing with 15 year old son. Brendan Connell teamed up with a local Annapolis Sailing Fitness personal trainer named Rob. Sterge Papadakis could not get enough of sailing with Mike Renda and so they made the long trek down from SSA to compete. Finally, Macy Nelson teamed up with J Bergquist to complete the picture.
