2010 King of the Bay
The weekend of June 5/6 saw a fleet of 12 505’s descend on Treasure Island for the annual 505 “King of the Bay” regatta. Organized this year by Jason Bright and Aaron Ross with much help from Shane Illidge as PRO with a support team of Pip Pearson, Marisa Kurk, David Guinther, Erik Berger, Falco, Fran and Tom Kassberg, Tim Murphy and Katie Haines. Thanks also to the absent Carl Smit for the use of his Rib and to Tom and Fran for the use of their power boat as a committee boat.
Saturday saw warm sunny weather with slightly less breeze than usual but still excellent sailing conditions. Race 1 saw Mike Martin and Andy Zinn pull away in the lead only to pick the wrong mark to round, several more followed his lead allowing Augie Diaz and Stephen Long an easy win from a very grateful Mike Holt and Mike Smith who had attempted to reposition the windward mark and made the beat shorter for all in the process. Thad Lieb and Pat Diola claimed third spot. The once invincible World Champion back in 5th!
Unfortunately for the rest of us Mike and Andy then stopped making mistakes, winning the following three races on Saturday with Augie/Stepen, Ten Conrads/Brian Haines and Bob Tennant/Rich Mundell filling the 2nd and 3rd spots in each race.
Sunday was more normal Bay conditions with the fog clearing to sunny skies and solid breezes. Mike and Andy sailed away to win both races by embarrassing distances, second both times was Mike Holt sailing on Sunday with Dave Byron and importantly a rudder and chasing hard in both races were Bob and Rich scoring 2 thirds. However that was not quite enough to move them up to second overall ending up one point behind Augie and Stephen.
As ever the San Francisco Bay offered up the best racing possible and the courses were set well for the conditions. Can there be a better place to sail 505’s?
